South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility has signed a contract with Petrovietnam (PVN), Vietnam’s largest state-owned enterprise, for the construction of O Mon 4 gas-fired combined cycle power plant. The project is slated to be built by 2028, with an installed capacity of 1,155 MW.

\n\n

The O Mon 4 power plant will be located about 180 km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Upon completion, this facility is expected to help establish a stable power supply for Vietnam’s southwest region including the Can Tho municipality.

\n\n

Doosan won the contract together with its consortium partner PECC2, a local company specialising in power plant construction. Doosan’s role will be to supply the main components and handle the construction and overall commissioning process.

\n\n

“This recent project win is owing to our successful delivery of numerous projects in Vietnam’s power sector, which has demonstrated our competitiveness in this field,” said Hyeonho Lee, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s plant EPC business group.

\n\n

He added, “As Vietnam has plans to additionally build gas-fired combined cycle power plants with a maximum combined capacity of 37.4 GW, we will actively endeavour to secure more orders here.”

PT Rekayasa Industri (Rekind) has completed the first phase of Muara Laboh geothermal power plant in West Sumatra, Indonesia. This 85 MW facility has been developed by PT Supreme Energy Muara Laboh (SEML) - a joint venture between PT Supreme Energy, ENGIE and Sumitomo Corporation.

\n\n

The electricity from the power plant, which is located in Solok Selatan Regency, will be supplied to the Sumatra grid owned by PT PLN (Persero). It can be distributed to approximately 340,000 households, said Rekind.

\n\n

“Rekind’s scope of work in Muara Laboh project is quite extensive because it includes the construction of the well pad and road access that is carried out simultaneously with the construction of a geothermal power plant and steam gathering system,” said Yanuar Budinorman, president director of Rekind. “All of this is done independently by Rekind’s best assets. We can also complete this project in accordance with the targets set by the stakeholders. Obviously, this is a proud achievement.”

Muara Laboh geothermal plant is reportedly part of the national strategic project implementation programme, associated with the 35,000 MW power plant acceleration project. It is said to be the first power plant in West Sumatra that utilises new and renewable energy.

\n\n

Rekind is an Indonesia-based EPCC (engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning) company, which has been involved in the geothermal industry for over 38 years. It has succeeded in building 16 geothermal power plants across the country.

\n\n

A subsidiary of PT Pupuk Indonesia, Rekind is currently working on the construction of Rantau Dedap geothermal power plant project with a capacity of 98.4 MW (two units), owned by PT Supreme Energy Rantau Dedap (SERD). Rekind has won the EPCC package, including the steam gathering system, well pad and road access. The project is located in Muara Enim Regency, Lahat Regency and Kota Pagar Alam, South Sumatra.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a financing package totalling more than US$305 million for Jawa-1, Indonesia’s largest combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant.

\n\n

“ADB is a partner of choice in Indonesia’s strategy to finance low-carbon power generation through private sector participation,” said Michael Barrow, director general for ADB's Private Sector Operations Department. “This project will support the country’s efforts to strengthen the liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply chain and increase energy security, while helping to reduce power generation costs.”

\n\n

The project comprises a 1,760-MW CCGT power plant and ancillary infrastructure in Cilamaya, Karawang, West Java. ADB’s financing package includes a direct loan of US$185 million, and a parallel loan of US$120 million provided by the Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund (LEAP), which is administered by ADB.

\n\n

According to ADB, Jawa-1 will be one of the first and largest projects in Indonesia using LNG, demonstrating the Indonesian government’s commitment to reduce dependency on coal and diesel fuel in favour of cleaner domestic energy sources such as natural gas. The CCGT power plant will supply energy to PT. Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia’s national power utility. The project is expected to help Indonesia avoid 1.77 mil t of carbon dioxide emissions.

\n\n

Jawa-1 is expected to power 11 million Indonesian households from 2021, supporting the country’s 100% electrification target by 2024. The project aims to create about 4,800 jobs during construction and 125 jobs when the plant is operational. It will also offer opportunities to improve women’s livelihoods through targets for women’s employment and training on livelihood and skills development to be monitored by ADB.

\n\n

LEAP is one of ADB’s co-financing vehicles dedicated to private sector infrastructure in Asia and the Pacific. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) supports the fund, launched in August 2016, through a US$1.5 billion equity commitment. Combined with ADB’s own capital and that of commercial partners, the fund is expected to provide financing of at least US$6 billion and enables ADB to boost support for quality and sustainable infrastructure.

\n\n

ADB estimates that Indonesia needs infrastructure investment of US$1.1 trillion for 2016–2030, and US$1.3 trillion over that period if climate adaptation measures are included. Accelerating investment in affordable and sustainable energy is critical to achieve the country’s economic and social development goals.

Samsung C&T has been awarded a contract to build the new 1,760-MW Jawa 1 power plant in Indonesia. It is expected to be the biggest combined cycle power plant in Southeast Asia, which aims to supply electricity to approximately 11 million homes.

Samsung C&T has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build a 1,760 MW combined cycle power plant in Indonesia. The US$1 billion project, located in Cilamaya, will be developed by PT Jawa Satu Power, a consortium of PT Pertamina (Persero), Marubeni Corporation and Sojitz Corporation. Samsung C&T will form a joint venture agreement with General Electric (GE) Power and PT Meindo Elang Indah (Meindo).

\r\n

The new Jawa 1 power plant is part of the government’s 35,000 MW electrification programme, and is expected to be the biggest combined cycle power plant in Southeast Asia. Upon its completion, the plant will supply electricity to approximately 11 million homes.

\r\n

Samsung C&T has successfully completed various power plant projects around the world, including Muara Tawar power plant in Indonesia, Dongducheon CCPP and Kumho CHP-S1 projects in Korea, EMAL Phase 2 CCPP and Shuweihat 2 CCPP in the UAE.
